Welcome To The Studio.

Whether you or your child is a beginner, intermediate with some experience, or an advanced musician working on audition or performance repertoire, we would love to work with you.

I have a MMus in piano pedagogy from West Chester University, and I’ve worked in private and classroom settings with pianists of all ages and skill levels. We’ll create a learning plan unique to your goals, and together, we’ll grow your skills at the piano.

About Local Pianist & Teacher Florence Phillips

Experienced Teachers

All of our teachers have teaching and performing experience, as well as some choral conducting and classroom experience. We’ve studied with some of the most renowned music teachers in the world- including Marvin Blickenstaff and Voces8.

We have a significant amount of experience working with both adults and children, and whether you are a retired individual looking to start out at the keyboard, a young professional picking up lessons again, or have a child that you’d like to gift a lifetime of music-making, we’d love to hear from you.

Piano and Voice Lessons For Kids in Downingtown, PA

All of our teachers started taking piano lessons at a young age, and know how much joy and confidence music can give a child. We will help your child learn the fundamentals like proper technique, the ability to read notes fluently, how to play by ear, and how to understand music theory, and our goal is always to help them become an independent musician who loves music – we don’t want kids to practice simply because they have to.

Of course, we also incorporate activities that make lessons fun. Children learn better when they are mentally engaged, and the last thing we want to do is burden them with another school-like activity. We’ll balance fun with serious instruction, and your child will grow into a competent, fulfilled musician.

Adult Lessons in the Downingtown Area

Our studio has a large group of adult students who meet regularly outside of studio time, and enjoy our almost-monthly group studio classes. Adults bring a unique set of goals and challenges to the piano, and we try to work with students on a case-by-case basis. As one of our adults stated at a performance class- “We clap for everything!” A community of supportive learners has proven to be a huge asset to our adult students.

There is no agenda in the studio, and your goals are our goals. If you are struggling with tension because of the hours you spend in front of a computer, we’ll work on that. If you want to be able to sight read, we’ll work on that. If you would like to share your music (or not!) we can accommodate that. If you have a favorite piece or genre that you’ve been hoping to work on, let us know! We want you to love the music, and we can create a personal learning plan for you.

The Materials I Use

For beginning students we like to incorporate the Faber Piano Adventures method and the Helen Marlais Succeeding At The Piano method. We don’t rely solely on method books though – we bring other materials and exercises into the picture. Also, I have a large library of books that I typically lend out to students as they begin- you won’t have a required large book expense at any point during your study.

What Do You Need To Get Started With Downingtown Piano Lessons?

We do ask that piano students have a piano or keyboard at home, and that’s because you won’t see any progress if you don’t practice. We’ll teach you everything you need to know and create a roadmap for you, but it’s up to you to spend time with your lesson materials at home. We’re not picky about which piano or digital keyboard you have, but it’s best if you have something with a pedal, weighted keys, and preferably a full-size 88 key keyboard. If you would like more information, you can read my guide on where to buy a piano in the West Chester area.

Regarding lesson materials, we have many books and methods for beginning students here at the studio, so you don’t actually have to bring anything (unless you have music or method books that you’d like to use!).
